Thats awesome. I wish I could do that for my HE machines!!

I did make the foaming hand soap for the first time today! I put about 2 T joy in the bottom of the pump bottle and filled with warm water (slowly so you dont make bubbles) and then gently swirled the water around (to not make bubbles).

This is going to save us a TON of money in the years ahead. I never need to buy foaming soap refills again!!

Congrats to YOU!!

We have been making our own laundry detergent for years, it is so so cheap I will never go back to buying it at the store.

Also did you know you can add natural essential oils and customize the scent too? Just a few drops mixed in and you are good to go!

My fav is lavender and in the summer lemon!!

essential oils can be found at at lots of places. I go to our local natural grocer and get mine. They are very inexpensive. A bottle of essential oil is about $6 but it will last years!!

I have about 6 different oils, and I only had to buy one of each scent, and I have been using those same bottles for about 3 years now Smile

I bought some essential oils last night at my local supermarket organics section. They were near homeopathic medicines.

I got Spearmint and Orange. I may go back and get peppermint too.

I got this from soapsgonebuy.com and I love it! I use the liquid version and it's so easy and cheap! Fels Naptha is a laundry soap from the old days and it's only $1 for a bar of it at my grocery store. I just save old juice jugs and pour it into that and shake it before I use it.

This is the liquid recipe:
Water
1 bar grated Fels Naptha soap
5 gallon bucket
1 cup washing soda (Arm and Hammer)
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
4 1/2 gallons hot water
Put grated Fels Naptha in saucepan and cover with water. Heat on low until dissolved. Fill bucket with hot water and add soap. Stir to combine. Add 1 cup washing soda and 1 cup borax and mix well. As it cools, it will thicken. About 24-48 hrs. If mixture becomes too thick, add hot water to thin it to desired consistency. May be used immediately. Mix well before each use. Use 1/2(normal) to 1 cup per load (heavy). Cost per load .04.

This is the powder recipe:
Powdered Laundry Detergent

1 cup grated Fels Naptha Soap
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup 20 mule team borax
Mix and store in airtight container or bag. For light or small loads, use 1 tablespoon. For normal loads, use 2 tablespoons. For heavy loads, use 3 tablespoons. Cost per load .15.
To make a large batch - grate 6 bars of Fels Naptha Soap and then add 3 cups of Washing Soda and 3 cups of 20 Mule Team Borax. Mix well and store in covered container.

TIP: The above recipes will NOT make suds in your washer so don't be alarmed. Fels Naptha Soap is a pure soap and typically makes little or no suds in the water. This makes it perfect for use in the new HE washers as well as tradional washers. You will also notice the need to either reduce your laundry softener or in most cases you can even eliminate the use of softener completely.

I do the powdered version, but I use a whole bar of fels naptha, 1 C washing soda & 1 C borax. It's easier than trying to measure 1 C of the soap. I think the hardest part is grating it! I've started making my own soap and I think it works just as well as Tide! Very Happy

That's so cool! I plan on making some too.

My son (9) is doing a science project determining which works better homemade laundry soap or national leading brand (Tide). The science show is in April...we'll see lol.

BTW I got the recipes from y'all here.....thanks!!!

This is how I made it..
1 bar grated Ivory soap..
1 cup washing soda
1 cup 20 mule team borax

I could not find Fels Naptha Soap. So I just used the Ivory (which I already had) I had read that you could use Ivory soap and it seems to do just fine..
The next time If I can find the Fels Naptha Soap I will probably give it a try it probably works better but who knows the stuff that I made with the ivory cleans REALLY GOOD..

And it just takes 1 Tablespoon so this will last forever..
Let me know how you like it...
Oh and NO IT DOES NOT SUD... At first I was like wait maybe I didn't add enough, But no it does not matter how much you add no suds at all BUT it still cleans really well..

Yes all the ingredients can be found at walmart, the felz-nappa soap or ivory soap, the arm and hammer washing soda ( I haven't seen any other brand) and the 20 Mule Team Borax ( again I have not seen any other brand)

All can be bought so cheaply and when there are coupons, it makes it even cheaper!!!!

most of the time, I can make my laundry detergent for less than a penny a load. I make it in a 5 gallon bucket and then pour it in washed out old laundry detergent bottles I saved. That way I can easily store it, shake it, and use it.

Also I wanted to add, my DD and I have HUGE skin sensitivities and since I have been making our own detergent, we have no issues what so ever. So those with skin allergies or sensitive skin, this is perfect for you too!!

It depends on my mood lol! If I am getting low on my last 5 gallon batch I will go make up a new batch be it liquid or powder. The powder is quicker, but the liquid seems to clean better. Especially with my extremely messy munchkins...they are always sticky and get mysterious stains everywhere! lol

Not all Walmarts have them. I could only find the Borax at mine--no A&H or Fels Naptha. We don't have Kroger. I may need to try Ace Hardware or something like that.

If anyone has a Sentry grocery store, they sell both the washing soda and Fels naptha there. Look carefully--they are at the very top shelf and easy to miss.

I made the liquid, and I no longer feel guilty wasting soap washing the dogs bedding every couple of days, or our kitchen rugs once a week.
