http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

You can buy a big box of food from them for $25 each month. Includes meat too. The site explains the whole thing and there are no income qualifications or anything. I jsut hadn't seen it mentioned here so I figured I'd post it.

Thanks for posting....it sounds a lot like Share Food only more religious. My parents used to do Share Food and it worked the same way. I don't know if share food is still around though

When I had 8 people in the house I would buy 2 or 3 boxes. Gave part away to people I knew needed food to. Have not used them now for 6 months of more. Normaly get ~$150 worth of food, is enough to feed 2 or 3 people for a week.

We do it everymonth. Krispsmith- Call their 800-number. My mom wanted to find out if they had it in their area, because the website did not have it listed. Turned out they had 4 churches within 5 miles of her that participated. They just had not updated their website. It is the same here. The church I go through is not listed on their site. I found out about it through the newspaper. Also, most WIC and foodstamp offices have a list you can pick up. (Not just for Angel Foods, but other places too- even if you don't need those other services) HTH.

As this program is dedicated to providing grocery relief , I presume it's for families of lower income, right?

Oh, ok. I wonder how they determine/prevent people from abusing the system. For example, people purchasing that don't need to be or reselling the items/taking them back for returns.

It's not based on your income. There is no determinations on whether you plan on abusing the system and I don't think you can return food anywhere w/o a receipt anyway so I doubt it is a problem. You have to fill out the form like a month in advance and get all the payments and paperwork to them and then go pick up the food at a specific location/day/time. I supposed you could re-sell some of the stuff but most of it is real food. I don't think they would sell one person tons and tons of boxes, kwim?

I don't know. I never thought about people doing that, mainly because I have always used whatever was in the box. I guess you could email or call them and ask about it. I know the stores here won't let you return food items without a reciept. We tried to exchange the gerber graduates meals that DS didn't like, and they told us we couldn't.

It sounds like it's a great program - for those that really need it. That's what I was trying to say before, I wonder if people are also using it that really shouldn't be (as in they have enough money but just want to get "cheap" groceries).

I hope the program continues and helps many deserving people.

This is from their website in the about us section

Churches that participate in Angel Food Ministries benefit in many ways:

Gives church members hands-on experience and training with rewarding service to others.
Provides discounted food not only for those that need it, but for any others who appreciate deep discounts on quality groceries.
Provides additional income to community outreach funds.
Gives churches and organizations an effective outreach to the community to meet real needs in a genuine way -- often times drawing new participants and visitors into the mission at hand.

We have a chruch that does that here for dontations and the boxes always have great things in them. the last one had alot of kraft products and a few other goodies in them that a family would use everyday. It was a huge box filled and it was only 25 dollars for it. Something to think about when you find one.

i suppose it is a trust thing. Since they have no guidlines they must feel you need the help or you wouldnt do it. There are people who can get over ANY system, it happens. It is sad but it happens. Hopefully this is helping those who need it.

I am not sure about all of them but the box that we got had not for resell marked on the indivual boxes. The way I understand it is the companies donate to this and give them products to put in the box. I could be wrong but that was how it was explained to me.

Good luck Nina. I hope you can find enough food and money to make it this month. have you moved? If not maybe you can find a less expensive place. if you have , in most cities there are palces where you can sell your blood and plasma for cash. i know it sounds gross but if you need money to eat soemtimes you need to do semi drastic thinga.

You said you DH used to be in the military? If he was, he won't be able to donate plasma if he had the anthrax vaccine. I know that you can look up research places though, I've heard about places around here that pay the vaccinated soldiers pretty well for their blood and plasma for some kind of research.

I recently found out about Angel Food Ministries and I have a call in to the closest church to get info on ordering and picking up. At this time financially it will help us, but is not completely necessary either. I have been trying to find ways to save some money and this is just one of them. Since it is not an income based program, I think it is fine for anyone and everyone of all walks of life to participate. Since groceries are a necessity and a large part of the monthly budget, I guess I am looking for "cheap" groceries. I am a SAHM and I am going to utilize every legal and legimate means to be able to stay home and raise my children. I say this is simply another way to ensure that I can afford to do the job I have chosen.

Anyone interested in saving on groceries should check it and see if it is for them, regardless of their income level.

Doesn't this bolded statement mean they don't care if you are low income? It sounds like they are offering it to everyone. That may be because it is donated to them and then when you buy it, the funds go back to the church, so really everyone is getting something good out of it. Wink

Yes, that is what I am trying to say. It is just as much a service to help those in need as it is an evangelism project. They do not care what your income or religion is. They are there to help you, and provide a service to everyone.

Actually, the more boxes they sell at the $25 price, the more FREE food they are able to get to people in true need. So it's a good thing that thrifty people use their service!

There's no host site in my area. Are their other services like this one? What are they and where can I find more info? This week I'm not able to go to the grocery store because we had things come up that ate our money away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone have any ideas on how to doctor up ramen noodles a little. Thanks so much!

there is also a SHARE program, for instance my states program is www.shareiowa.com and its a fantastic program. The food that you buy from there is nothing that could be returned to a store, as it was a no name brand or specialty product.
