Lots to read on this and a number of links...

Update on FDA's Investigation

January 17, 2009: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a very active and dynamic investigation into the source of the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak. At this time, the FDA has traced one likely source of Salmonella Typhimurium contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), which manufactures both peanut butter that is institutionally served in such settings as long-term care facilities and cafeterias, and peanut paste—a concentrated product consisting of ground, roasted peanuts—that is distributed to food manufacturers to be used as an ingredient in many products including cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream.

The FDA has notified PCA that product samples originating from its Blakely, Ga., processing plant have been tested and found positive for Salmonella by laboratories in the states of Minnesota, Georgia and Connecticut. The state of Minnesota reported to FDA that its samples of King Nut peanut butter are a genetic match to the strain of Salmonella that has caused illnesses in the state and around the country. King Nut is a distributor of PCA product.

As a result of these updated test results, on January 16, PCA expanded its voluntary recall to include all peanut butter produced on or after August 8, 2008, and all peanut paste produced on or after September 26, 2008, in its Blakely, Ga., plant because of potential Salmonella contamination. The product being recalled is sold by PCA in bulk packaging in containers ranging in size from five to 1700 pounds. The peanut paste is sold in sizes ranging from 35-pound containers to product sold by the tanker container. These products are not sold directly to consumers. PCA has stopped all production at its Blakely, Ga., plant as the FDA continues its investigation into the source of the Salmonella contamination.

Based on this information, and on the current state of the investigation, the FDA recommends that consumers avoid eating products that have been recalled and discard them.

Because identification of products subject to recall is continuing, the FDA urges consumers to postpone eating commercially-prepared or manufactured peanut butter-containing products and institutionally-served peanut butter until further information becomes available about which products may be affected. Efforts to specifically identify those products are ongoing.

At this time, there is no indication that any national name brand jars of peanut butter sold in retail stores are linked to the PCA recall. As the investigation continues over the weekend, and into next week, the FDA will be able to update the advice based on new sampling and distribution information.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health authorities are urging consumers to avoid eating foods that contain peanut butter until they can learn more about a deadly salmonella outbreak.

But the FDA says there's no indication of problems with peanut butter sold in jars at supermarkets.

Investigators are focusing on peanut paste and peanut butter produced at a Georgia plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America. Its products are distributed to institutions and food companies but are not sold directly to consumers.

Because of the concern, a number of manufacturers are recalling products made with peanut butter as a precaution. Kellogg's has recalled 16 products including peanut butter sandwich crackers and two varieties of peanut butter cookies.

The Midwest supermaket chain Hy-Vee is recalling products made in its bakery departments with peanut butter. And Perry's Ice Cream says it's recalling some of its products that contain peanut butter.

The outbreak is blamed in six deaths and more than 470 cases of illness in 43 states. And it's renewed calls for tougher food safety laws.

Ok, does anyone know if Peter Pan has made it to the list yet? I looked on the link in the OP, and it isn't saying it is, but my DD came home from school and said that they told her at school that it's contaminated.

Country Maid Inc, is voluntarily recalling its 2 pound packages of Classic Breaks Peanut Butter Cookie Dough because the peanut butter used to make the cookie dough was supplied by Peanut Corporation of America and may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Everything I've heard, seen, read says that home use (jars) of PB is fine. It's institutional containers (large cans, etc...) and PB paste that they've found the problem in so far.

IF the warning comes to include home use PB, it will be added to the FDA site linked above.

email received 2/10 from Kashi:

Here at Kashi, we consider our consumers family. That’s why we’re taking a proactive position on the peanut product recall and recommending the following steps to protect your health and that of your families.
Since you received a Kashi™ TLC® Oatmeal Dark Chocolate cookie sample in the mail last year, we want to be sure you have the most updated information.

No doubt you have heard of all of the recalls involving peanut products from Peanut Corporation of America. Initially, our products were not involved, as only peanut butter and peanut paste were recalled—ingredients that we do not use in our products.

As Peanut Corporation expanded their recall to include additional peanut ingredients, we learned that the facility that bakes our TLC cookies used the recalled peanuts in products produced on the same line as our Oatmeal Dark Chocolate cookie. Therefore, we have voluntarily recalled all of our Kashi TLC cookies, including the cookie sent to you. If you still have the cookie, please throw it out just to be safe; we would never want to put our consumers’ health at risk.

Also included in this recall are:

• Kashi® TLC® Chewy Granola Bars in Trail Mix and Honey Almond Flax varieties, 7.4-ounce box with a "Best If Used Before" date prior to September 19, 2009 and followed by the letters CD (SEP 19 2009 CD)

• Kashi® TLC® Chewy Granola Bars Peanut Peanut Butter, 7.4-ounce box with a "Best If Used Before" date prior to August 8, 2009 and followed by the letters CD (AUG 08 2009 CD)

• Kashi™ TLC® Chewy Cookies in Oatmeal Dark Chocolate, Happy Trail Mix and Oatmeal Raisin Flax varieties only, 8.5-ounce box with a "Best If Used Before" date prior to July 30, 2009

If you have purchased boxes of any of these products, you should throw them out and call us at 877-701-5868 for a refund. For more information, visit us at www.kashipeanutbutterrecall.com

I just got this email and am ticked. I have purchased about four or more boxes of these in the past few months. I have one partially eaten. What gets me, is that my son loves these and he has Hirschsprung's and can become more ill then others if he gets any kind of bowel or stomach illness. Last weekend he complained his tummy hurt and threw up at church twice! I wonder if it was the cookies because he had eated several the day before!!!

Evil or Very Mad What a slimy...

Peanut-borne salmonella is subject of outrage in Congress
http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-na-peanut12-2009feb12,0,2288068.story

Quote:
Stewart Parnell, owner and president of Peanut Corp., refused to answer the committee's questions today, repeatedly invoking his 5th Amendment rights.

Internal company e-mails obtained by the committee show the company's president was alerted on numerous occasions that batches of the company's products were infected with salmonella. Yet according to Parnell's e-mail responses, he instructed staff to "turn the product loose" and said that he goes "thru this once a week. I will hold my breath . . . again."

At today's hearing, Parnell said only: "Mr. Chairman and members of the committee, on advice of my counsel, I respectfully decline to answer your questions based on the protections afforded me under the U.S. Constitution."

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) held up a gallon bucket wrapped in yellow crime scene tape and presumably containing some type of recalled peanut butter product, and asked Parnell if he would be willing to "take the lid off" and eat any of it.

Parnell again invoked the 5th Amendment and was ushered out of the hearing room along with Lightsey and their counsel. Before his dismissal, subcommittee Chairman Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) asked, "The food poisoning of people, is that just a cost of doing business for you?"

What the heck! What a slime ball. Thanks Laurie for sharing that! I returned my box of kashi cookies, and also called the company. So obviously a lot of these products won't be back on the shelves for a while, since I am guessing they will have to find new manuf. companies to product them.
