I never heard of it either, so I googled it:
Chow-chow, sometimes spelled Chowchow, is a relish made from a combination of different vegetables: green and red tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, beans, asparagus, cauliflower and peas, which are pickled in a jar and served cold. The name is based on the French word chou for cabbage. Chow-chow is regionally associated with Pennsylvania and the southern United States, though the recipes vary greatly. Pennsylvania chow-chow, best known under the Wos-Wit brand, is generally much sweeter than the southern varieties. Southern varieties can be sweet to hot. Chow-chow can be eaten by itself or can be used as a condiment.
I bought a jar of pickled asparagus once from a exposition I attended and was it good. I wish I could remember the name of the company because I'd mail order some. I think it was something like father-in-law or brother-in-law. As good as it was, I bet a batch made right from your garden is even better. |
