| Can you soak them a little in water first to draw some of the salt out? |

I wouldn't think too long. You could even get some of the salty liquid off of the pieces just by rinsing them. |

I ended up making this yesterday. I soaked the ham after cutting it into realy small dices. It probably soaked for a few hours, while I soaked the peas. The soup was great! This is basically how I made it:
Sort Rinse and Soak 1 lb bag peas for 4 hours
Dice cooked ham cubes (maybe 1/4 C) into small pencil eraser sized pieces. Soak in cold water til peas are done and drain.
In a stock pot, put 2-3 T olive oil and add ham dices cook until brown, then add:
diced onions (half a large sweet onion)
3 carrots halved and sliced (peel on)
1 tsp minced garlic
black pepper
cook until veggies are soft
Drain water from peas and reserve.
Add peas to pot, 2 cans chicken broth. Strain reserved liquid and pour into pot. Add 2 packets Washingtons Golden Seasoning. Boil/Simmer for 2 hours. Allow to cool, pour into processor and puree.
This was a wonderful soup. I think next time I will double the recipe so we can have leftovers. Between myself, DH and our 3 year old there wasnt much left. I made Rhodes rolls with it and it was perfect! |

I love peas - I could eat them frozen, cold, hot, whatever - I LOVE THEM! But for some weird reason I just can't stomach split pea soup. |
